Runescape Shortcuts - Hidey Holes and Rope Racks - A "How To" Guide

You can read the blog about the guide... or just click on the link here for the actual guide:
Runescape Agility Shortcuts: How to Build Hidey Holes and Rope Racks Guide
And of course:
Runescape Cooking - Feel the Burn:How To Cook Rocktail Fish Without Burning: What You Do From Level 93 to 95

Been really hopping recently - Aside from playing with my new Lenovo Ideapad S10-3t Netbook Tablet Computer (my caps- I really love this little netbook!) I've been catching up on all the work (and play) that's fallen behind.  You may have noticed several new Runescape blogs in the last few days.
Today's blog is short and sweet, and relates to the hubpages I write (see sidebar.)  With all the updates recently, there's been a lot going on in Runescape.  And with so many BIG changes, there's been a minor change that didn't catch a lot of notice.
The shortcuts update, Hidey-Holes and Rope Racks.  This small, unsung update is a lot more important than you'd suspect.  Sure, the Rope Racks aren't such a big deal.  After all, how many of us truly use the Eagle Transport System that much?  But the Hidey-Holes are a very nice change.  Out of all the Runescape agility shortcuts, the crossbow-and-grapple shortcuts have been, as a class, the most useless.  I mean really, who just happens to carry a crossbow and grapple around by accident?  If you've got them with you, you planned for it.
As a result, most of us ignore those shortcuts.  Jagex finally did something about it... with a little work, those shortcuts will forever after be easy to access!
...Yes, I did say 'a little work'.  Don't panic, it's not that hard.  When I first looked into it, I realized there were the 'repeaters' all over the internet; you know, the sites that just cut and paste quotes from Jagex.  And there were good informational sites that offered dictionary definitions of certain aspects.   But nobody had bothered yet to tie it all together into one step by step guide.
I play a lot.  Obviously, since I blog about it.  But I've only done one guide previously.  There's no sense writing a guide that's already been written about 50 times or more all over the internet.  So my one and only guide up until now has been the 'cooking Rocktails' guide.  I wrote it because it was a helpful technique, very useful between cooking levels of 93 to 95, and nobody had written one.
The Hidey-Hole and Rope Rack guide came about in the same way.  I couldn't find one, and it seemed like a useful idea, so I wound up writing it myself.  I hope you find it useful!

I was hoping for the Aura. I sure hope it's got a practical effect. I don't need another cosmetic accessory... I'm already pretty enough!

(cough)

I like your melee setup. Sold off my Dharok's, though I've still got Guthans and Karils. The Helm of Neitznot is undervalued by a lot of players. It's got good stats, and looks very cool.

I like barrows gloves over any other standardized melee gloves, and really like the Fury.
The Berserker Ring is great. Someday I'll go get it imbued, though I hate team games. Sigh... if I didn't have to earn it, I guess I wouldn't appreciate it.

Nice gear, and good advice.
Thanks!

Dose it matter what plant you farm, dose it take longer to grow then?

Crewman6 said...

Not my specialty- I hate farming! But Monique loves it, she's got an untrimmed farming cape, she's actually been careful not to 99 anything else. Though several of her skills are getting high enough she may soon have to change that to trimmed.

But I asked her, she said yes, it can make a large difference. Especially if you're growing trees. If you have some more detailed or specific questions, ask and I'll get her to answer for us.

Anonymous said...

I hate farming too. But I want to get into those worlds that you need 1500 total level. (I thought train up my low skills to get there.)

Crewman6 said...

Training your lowest skills is probably the fastest way to do it. Did you get your penguins tonight? Monique and I always try to do them on Tuesday evenings. In a couple of days, we should be able to do our trolls again.
I see where auras sort of came out today... just that nobody yet has the points to buy them with!

Anonymous said...

You start with 500 loyalty rewards. But you have to
go to the RS home page, scroll down to the bottom, go to loyalty rewards and give them the information they need. I got an emote called 'cat fight' and the aura 'Reverence.' I think they should make cat fight called: Pussy fight, Slapy or Tantrum-Knight. They might still be on sale. The guy that you get your stuff from is in burthorp, I took the free teleport. You'll see when they know you in the loyalty program.

Crewman6 said...

I had already signed up, but for some reason thought we only got 300 points. Went to Burthorpe, and got the same Aura you did- Reverence. Then I used it to fight the Trolls again.
I know it's not a new month yet, but wanted to try the 7-wave version and see if I could survive it. Turned out, I can... barely. I had no food left, and 2 pray pots, by the end. Still, I made it, so I'm going to try the hard wave for points next time and see if you get more for doing the harder version.

Thanks for the Aura pointer- I like mine!

Anonymous said...

I got it for the black demons and some boss fights.
(Cough) jad (cough)Have you killed or helped kill the Kalphite Queen? I might want to try it if you have any advise.

Crewman6 said...

After beating the Troll Invasion's 7-wave attack on the 30th, I went back yesterday to do it for the points... and got killed. I was so aggravated! They piled me, and I could see my hit points going down, but no matter how much I clicked on food, it just wasn't taking my clicks. So I had to watch as I died, and couldn't take any action.

Made it to level 6, and only got 12k. Next time, guess I'll stay with the sure thing, or else get more practice during the rest of the month.

Monique had to kill the Queen once or twice, maybe as a special slayer task, I think? It was a long time ago, so I don't really remember why, but I went and helped her. It was challenging, but not impossible. I seem to recall having an easy time for our first kill while Monique kept leaving to resupply. The second time, I had to teleport out to resupply.

Probably depends who she targets the most.

Best advice? Find a good guide, like Wiki. 2nd best advice? Don't bring anything you'd hate to lose.

Good luck with her!

Anonymous said...

Do you recall what level you were when you were fighting her?

Crewman6 said...

I was either max combat, or very near. I've had my combat stats up for a long time. If it wasn't max, I was probably still working on my prayer 99, which I got after finishing summoning. So at the very least, figure mid 130's.

Hope you had a fun and safe 4th of July!

Anonymous said...

I'm Canadian, so I didn't celebrate it. Wow, you were in your 130's I might wait on it then.

Crewman6 said...

Canadian- that's cool, I had no idea. You know, when you grow up with something, there's a tendency to forget not everybody grew up with it.

I was 130's, but remember, I'm awful at any combat more complicated than praying and hitting.

I'd forgotten until just now, but some really good advice I read back then was to go fight the Queen with only 3 items, and no food. After you fight to the death a few times, you lose your fear of being killed by her, plus you develop a feel for whether you could really defeat her if you were properly geared up.

I'd forgotten about reading that, but it must have stuck with me, I'm using a similar process in Dungeoneering. Been Silk Hood hunting, and not eating or trying to survive. When they kill me, I just gatestone back to where I died, and keep on going. Since points aren't my goal, it's a lot more fun this way.

Anonymous said...

Don't forget eating! (Pray-hit-eat) Great, I'll try the 3 items first.

Crewman6 said...

Eating! Uhmm, pray... hit... eat... pray... hit... pray... oops
Told you I'm no good at combat. Forgot to eat!

:^)

Good luck with the Queen!

Anonymous said...

I might not be around in about a week or so. I'll tell you when I'm back. I might have fought the Kalphite by the time I'm back. I'm not a 100% sure of my plans.

Crewman6 said...

Thanks for letting me know. Have a good time, and stay safe. Good luck on the Queen!

Anonymous said...

Hey I'm back. Didn't have time for the queen. :(

Crewman6 said...

Welcome back! Maybe now you can give the queen some attention. Monique and I have been mostly dungeoneering, and every now and then trying to get the Whip Vine. No luck yet.

Anonymous said...

I thought you might go for that! I'm not going to go for the all out battle at this combat level. But I might go with just the whip or something.

Crewman6 said...

I'd like to try out the modified whip, but so far, no whip vine. Been mostly in the dungeons, so not really trying too hard.

Anonymous said...

I got up to 100 combat! I just started doing some summoning. 5min later, 100 combat!

Crewman6 said...

That's flat-out awesome. Seriously cause for celebration... 100 is a gigantic milestone, a symbolic 'sound barrier' to break past.
Congratulations!

Anonymous said...

I only brought one rope. Ops. I got into the cave, but not the queen.

Anonymous said...

I've gotten a few comments by lower levels. :)

Crewman6 said...

Getting your combat level to 3 digits is a big deal. It's cool that others take note of it.

Shame about the rope- I can never remember if I need to bring them every time or not, so on the rare occasions I have a slayer task that takes me that way, I bring a couple just to be safe.
Better luck on your next try!

Anonymous said...

I don't have a lot of time for runescape right now. :( I've just been so busy. If I'm lucky I can get 1 hour into RS.

Crewman6 said...

That's a shame. I've had the same problems at times, but luckily right now I get to spend at least an hour a day.
I feel your pain... being busy (especially if it's job-related) can be great, but you want "me-time" too!

Anonymous said...

It's a lot of little stuff. Things that take about half a hour a day... but there are about 6000000000 of them!

Crewman6 said...

6000000000 of them? Wow, I can't even separate that many zeroes! Is that in billions?
Heh... actually, I've had days like that. Fortunately, we've just weathered a multi-month spell of craziness, and hopefully life will stay on an even keel for while. Besides, have you read today's behind the scenes? They're releasing a pet baby Jad! I want one... two... lots!

Anonymous said...

Cool!!! I wish I had the levels! I over-exaggerated a little... it just feels like that!

Crewman6 said...

I understand the feeling. Our staff of 4 at work has been reduced to one full-timer, me, and one undergoing chemo. There are days I come home and my hands are thrumming from all the frenzied typing!

For baby Jad, I still need 7 levels of Slayer, and ALL of the Soul Wars Zeal. I hate group minigames... except for Dungeoneering, and I usually solo or duo with Monique for that.

Anonymous said...

That sucks! About a year or so ago it was about the same thing here.

I love Castle Wars... but I would rather master all of my skills in two days then play soul wars!

Crewman6 said...

Thanks. And I completely agree about Soul Wars. I do NOT play well with others, always pretty much solo skilled. But... I really want baby Jad!!

Anonymous said...

I'm going on a roadtrip. I'll need to be in a hotel for me to post any comment.

Crewman6 said...

Have fun, and be safe!

Anonymous said...

What is your favourite skill to train?

Crewman6 said...

First it was combat in general. Then summoning.

Now it's dungeoneering. Slayer is 2nd favorite. How about you?

Anonymous said...

First it was Woodcutting. I was a level 16 with 57wc. Then it was Smithing. But for right now... combat in general.

Crewman6 said...

I can see the appeal of woodcutting. Smithing seemed boring, but it's very useful. I agree with combat. It's just more interesting in general.

Anonymous said...

I don't train smithing anymore... until I need it.

Crewman6 said...

Mine was somewhere around 90, and I realized how much better dungeoneering would be if I could smith Promethium. So I took a month (or so) and went for 99. What a pain. Since I was really obsessed, Monique was getting kind of aggravated with me. Glad that's over!

Anonymous said...

Well, you got the job done!

8 summoning levels later...

I got to 101 combat!!!!!!!!!!!

Crewman6 said...

Wow- Congrats on the 101, and even more on the summoning! That's a time-consuming and expensive skill to level.

Anonymous said...

Yeah. My over-nice friend gave me about 13k shards!
So, in the end... it wasn't much money spent. (For me!)

Crewman6 said...

Very cool- Now that's the way to level a skill!

Anonymous said...

What do you think it the best skill for me to power-train?

Crewman6 said...

The one you enjoy the most. :^)
Barring that, one that will achieve a goal you want. Like I went for 99 Smithing because it made Dungeoneering more fun.
And right now, I'm going nuts doing Slayer, because I want baby Jad.
But pick something you'll have fun at. Combat-related is my favorite, but Summoning and Construction are fun too.
Prayer is extremely useful, but expensive to power-train.
If you want to know what I'd focus on given your 101 combat, I'd raise my combat level. You'd have to work on melee, magic, and ranging skills. And Summoning... and Prayer.

Or if you want a shorter-term, easier goal, maybe woodcutting or making fire.

Monique is working on getting her crafting up to 97, so we won't have to hunt for someone to do our Crafting lvl 97 effigies for us.

There's such a vast set of choices. It's all fun... I wish I could play 24/7... well... maybe not that much. But a lot!

Anonymous said...

I don't chat with anyone, so if you don't talk to me i won't be hurt. Honestly, I don't know where you look to see if a friend is talking to you!
I'll friend you when I log in next!

Crewman6 said...

That sounds good. Now that I know you've seen it, I removed my name from the comments. In my first week of playing, I got tricked into giving out my password. Nothing to steal, but it made me a lot more security-minded.
Still Slaying for Baby Jad. Bout half-way through level 95 now. It really takes a long time!

Anonymous said...

Did you change you password?
I saw someone with the Baby Jad! It looked like a cute, fuzzy killing machine!

Crewman6 said...

Nope... Wish I had him! I've been slaying till my brains have started to rot. My next task is Tzhaar, which got upgraded to full-size, adult Jad. Now that they've patched Runescape so my technique no longer works all by itself, I'm not sure if I can do it. But I've been wanting to try.

Anonymous said...

Tell me if you can get it!

Crewman6 said...

I sure will! :^)
True to form, I've been practicing on Youtube videos all night and today. Even with that, it's still going to come down to luck more than anything.
But either way, I'll let you know.

Crewman6 said...

Nope- He got me. I actually did the best I've ever done with him, running, shooting, targeting the healers, and still praying... but the healers were too good for me. Still need to work on it.
For now, it's back to Slayer. Maybe Kuradel will assign Jad again soon.

Anonymous said...

Good try! My friend(the over-nice one) got 99 magic!
What was the hardest and most easy skillcape for you?

Crewman6 said...

Thanks! Congrats to your friend.
I think my easiest was getting 99 strength, con, att, and defense simultaneously. I just dharoked 'em and the blew right past me before I knew it.
The hardest? That's tougher to choose from, but I think probably construction. I got seriously bored building doors and taking them down.

Anonymous said...

That's cool to know.
I'm training Woodcutting.(going for a 99) If I get bored of that I just go to world 15 and play a few games of Castle Wars. (then back to woodcutting)

Crewman6 said...

Woodcutting's one of those unsung skills. Takes a lot of patience. Mines got a long way to go. I've never cared for the multi-player mini-games, though I'm going to have to get 100 Zeal from Soul Wars soon. I'm only about 33k away from my next Slayer level. Still a long way to go.

Anonymous said...

I just leveled up to 89 woodcutting. Maybe you might find Soul Wars fun!
I just think it has to many people in a game.

Crewman6 said...

Congrats on the 89! You might be right about Soul Wars. It's not the game so much, I'm just an antisocial old curmudgeon and mostly don't play well with others... :^)

Anonymous said...

Lol.
What would be better for me... I have the rune crossbow already. Should I buy karil's crossbow for 172k that has cheaper bolts but is two handed and less accurate.
OR
Should I use my rune crossbow that is slower but more expensive, one handled and more accurate.

Crewman6 said...

Not speaking to which is best, but my personal preference is Rune Crossbow with Broad-tipped bolts because it's one-handed and I can wear a shield at the same time.
Have you done the new quest yet? Monique and I are in the middle of it, and taking a break because we had a brief visit from friends. We're at the stage where we're trying to find baby bloodvelds...

Anonymous said...

I haven't done it yet. I've been getting ready for the bonus xp weekend.

Crewman6 said...

Bonus XP weekend! I love those. Monique and I aren't sure if we'll be able to dedicate the weekend to it like last time. But we're going to try!
By the way... the quest? That's the hardest boss monster on a quest I've fought since Nomad. (Nomad was harder.) I died 5 times before winning.
But the rewards are awesome.

Anonymous said...

Omg 5 times!
I was looking into how to chat in world 160 at the GE... I saw a green dot on the mini map, then I saw you! Nice armour! (melee & magic)

Crewman6 said...

I looked over at one point and told Monique - "There's my Friend!"
I love World 160 because it's easier to keep my focus... but at the same time, it's a nightmare when I really WANT to communicate!!!
It was cool to see you there. I think I had just finished Ice Strykewyrms and was getting ready for Daggonoths next.

Anonymous said...

So that's why I saw you in your magic armour.
(Then in your melee!)

Crewman6 said...

Yep... I'm Slayer-centric. Want my Son-of-Jad! Right now I'm in full obssessive mode, which is useful when there's something I really want. At least Slayer's fun and always changing.

Anonymous said...

I need to take the time to do more slayer. Where should I cook?

Crewman6 said...

My favorite place is the Cook's Guild. The bank is in the same room as the oven.
If you're not able to use that yet, probably my favorite spot was the furnace in Catherby. I've even spent a lot of time cooking in my POH kitchen with Rocktails while power-training.

Anonymous said...

The POH might work. (I only have the butler)

Crewman6 said...

I forget how much the butler costs, and how fast he can carry things for you. But if you don't mind the added expense, he can be very fast. Once you get a rhythm going of cooking while he's delivering, it goes pretty fast. The useful thing about using your POH is the keg. You can make a Chef's Delight keg, and have a constant supply to keep your cooking level 5% higher than normal.

Anonymous said...

I'm close for the level of it! Your rocktail blog gave me the motivation to train construction.

Crewman6 said...

That's cool! It's nice to know it helped someone. Construction is a cool skill, but man, it felt like I was forever making dungeon doors and taking them down.

Anonymous said...

Yeah. All my friends have that thing with it! But, for me, I'm fine with it!

Crewman6 said...

It helps when you don't mind it. We've got another bonus exp weekend coming up. That's pretty much how I got my last few levels of Construction. Not sure what I'll be doing this time. Slayer, if I'm not done yet.

Anonymous said...

I'm going to train Combat and Woodcutting. (Maybe some farming)

Crewman6 said...

Sounds like a good mix. I'm still working on Slayer, but if I somehow finish that, I've got some supplies for crafting, and can always woodcut or make fires.
Jad just killed me again. I do good until the healers show up. Still don't have that part worked out.

Anonymous said...

I got a Knock out aura. (I think its called that.)

Crewman6 said...

I know the one you mean. I just picked it up too, was hoping it could help next time I go after Jad. I haven't actually used it. Let me know what you think.
Ready for the bonus exp weekend? Monique and I have let all our friends and family know we'll be 'occupied' this weekend!

Anonymous said...

I like the knock out! I hit a 276 as my finishing blow. (for you it would be higher)

Crewman6 said...

That sounds pretty cool! I just got home from work, about to start my bonus weekend. Monique's been at it since this morning, she got herblore 97, then 98, and is near to 99 already. Making Overloads for Herblore. Wow, talk about fast exp. I told her to do my Slayer for me if she can level that fast!

Anonymous said...

Lol!
I'm at 102 combat with 79 att, const(constitution) and def. I wish the whip could train strength!

Crewman6 said...

I used the whip's shared option to give exp equally to all, and if anything happened to get off balance, brought a spare weapon to even the balance again. (I forget, but back in the day, I think the second weapon of choice was a Dragon Scimitar)

What were you fighting for your knockout of 276? I tried it on Steel Dragons, and it kept finishing them off with hits in the 70's!

Anonymous said...

Yeah... I think I got lucky. Really lucky! I got it on a werewolf. It was my first try with the aura. All the other times it was 40, 15, 10...
I just bought a dragon longsword! I was in a rush because I didn't want to wast any bonus xp.

Crewman6 said...

:^)
That first shot was a great one!
Aside from that, I've been using it on Abyssal Demons, and it consistently flashes blue. To me, that means it's saving me at least one hit, possibly more, every time it flashes. Over a whole assignment, that's a lot of time saved. I really like it.

Anonymous said...

I think your right. After using it a lot it came to mind.

Crewman6 said...

It's been a nice assist in speeding up Slayer.

Anonymous said...

What did you get up in bonus xp weekend?

Crewman6 said...

Slayer. I went up from 97... to 98. Dang, and I worked like a fool all weekend on it! Still, I got so many effigies, I've nearly got enough to get 99 in it. Monique 99'd her Herblore, went up in crafting, and went from low 80's to mid 90's in Fletching (to help us with effigies).
I think I worked on the wrong skills!

Anonymous said...

You helped your goal. That's what matters. I got my att, str and def up to 79. (I already had constitution at 79)
I also got my woodcutting xp up. I'm close (ish) to level 90 now.

Anonymous said...

I saw you were in world 145...how is Soul Wars?

Crewman6 said...

To respond in order:
You're right. I now have enough effigies to get my 99 in Slayer. But they're all in skills I don't always have. I'm cashing them in slowly each day.
Cool on the woodcutting- that's a tedious skill to level. Takes a lot of stick-to-it.

On world 145... I've been world hopping, trying to find a tie-world for Soul Wars. No luck, so I'm just taking my chances on the official Soul Wars worlds.
Fortunately, I still had 70 Zeal from Nomad's quest, and now I've got 86. 14 more Zeal to go, cash in my effigies, and I'll have Baby Jad!!!

Anonymous said...

Nice job!
I've been playing Castle Wars lately. I'm trying to get 500 games played. I'm at 232!

Crewman6 said...

500 Soul Wars? Holy Cow! I guess I'll eventually have to do that for the cape, but that's probably years away...
You're halfway there already? Okay, that's a lot of dedication.

My big news? I adopted Baby Jad last night, just after midnight. I found out he can be put in your house menagerie, so I'm considering getting another. (More Soul Wars- Gaahh!)

Anonymous said...

Sorry! I guess it was unclear, I meant Castle Wars. If it was Soul Wars I would barely get to ten!
Next time I see you, can I also see baby Jad?

Crewman6 said...

Not your fault, you said it just fine. I've just got Soul Wars on the brain. I knew what you were saying, just typed it wrong. I'm immensely impressed!
And yes, I love showing him off. If I'm doing something where he can tag along, he'll probably be out already. I still have to finish raising my newest black dragon baby, guess now that I've got Jad he can join the others in the menagerie.

Anonymous said...

If I got something that cool, I would have it with me most of the time too!

I found a really good 2 person Money-Maker...
You can kill the Giant Mole. The hide and claw are about 8.5k each. The wiki has a page on it. (If you have any questions you can ask me.)

Crewman6 said...

:^) I'm going to be happy about him for a long time.

Monique and I have tried the Mole; he's definitely good money, but after a while we got a little tired of chasing him down when he'd disappear. If I'm not in a rush, I make pretty good money from Slayer. Unlike recently, I was rushing and mainly broke even.
For money, though, I usually flip things on the GE. It's quick and easy. I don't take big risks, and don't make huge money, but can make a few million a day if I work at it.
I think I'm going to focus on building my bank back up now, so I can finally finish my house. Mainly the dungeons.

Anonymous said...

How do you flip things on the GE? What should I flip?

Crewman6 said...

Below is the process I use. It's very simple and basic:

Buy 1 item on GE. Offer much more than it's median value. Write down the price- this will be your "Sell Price." Sell that item back for 1 Gold. Write down what it actually sells for- this will be your "Buy Price"

Test trade a few; see if this price moves at a decent speed. If so, trade the maximum.

Things to keep in mind:
1- It's a good basic procedure, but sometimes I still lose money. That's okay, I make more than I lose.

2- I don't risk more than I can afford to lose, and if an item is too expensive (for me) to risk testing this way, then I need to look for cheaper items.

3- A good place to start is Pure Essence, and Maple logs. Both are low risk, fairly cheap, and the max buy limit is decent. For other items, just experiment with commodities that people constantly use, like runes, herbs, potions, ores, etc.

4- Nothing lasts. I might do great with Pure Essence at noon, and by noon-thirty they're doing bad. You never know. So I keep an eye closely on my trades, and re-test items often.
(Side note: notice events that can change the market. Bonus exp weekends tend to make prices rise dramatically. Quests and updates can make prices rise or fall. Just have to pay attention.)

5- Don't leave anything overnight. Try to plan so all your trades are done before quitting for the evening. More advanced players can anticipate and take advantage of updates and price changes. But for me, I need a simple process. This is as simple as I can make it.

Okay, now you know everything I know. I haven't done any flipping since before the baby Jad announcement, I'm planning on trying some out tonight and see how the market is. If I do, I'll let you know how it went.

Anonymous said...

Thanks so so so much!!!!! I'll try it today! You rock!

Crewman6 said...

I hope it works out well for you. I forgot to mention, use Wiki to find out item buy limits.

I'm playing with it right now. It's slow going, but I'm doing well with Pure Essence at the moment. Making about 75k per flip, at a very small profit margin of 3 gold.

I'm also working on herblore, so I've got something to stay busy with while waiting for my trades to complete.

Good luck with it!

Anonymous said...

I was doing pure essence too. But I was only getting 2gp each. I made about 10k out of it all. I didn't want to risk a lot for my first few times.

Crewman6 said...

That's exactly the right way to go about it. Stay in your comfort zone and build up as you gain confidence. I was getting 3 gold each, and trading 25,000 at a time. So it was giving me 75,000 gold profit per flip. Did pretty good with Steel Bars, too, but I got burned a bit with Cannonballs. Still, it was only 10,000 balls, at about 2.5 million, and I use them with some monsters. So if they don't sell, I'll just keep them for my own use.
That's a good thought there- try to buy things you can use if you wind up stuck with them.
Also, a lot of times, I'll sell right away at a small loss, so I can get my gold back in use with something more successful.

Glad you're off to a good beginning!

Anonymous said...

It's all thanks to you!

Crewman6 said...

It works more often than not. But I didn't follow my own advice- this morning I bought 10,000 Steel bars, but had to leave for work before they sold. Got home to find I'd lost 300k. Oh well. That's why I try to have all six slots in use when I'm flipping. That way I have more wins than losses, and come out ahead.

Anonymous said...

I sold my mole claws and hides for about 1m. Not bad.

Crewman6 said...

You're right- that's a good job. I made about 1 million last night in about 45 minutes of trading... so the 300k loss from that morning isn't so bad now! :^)

Anonymous said...

That's good! I like the new loyalty rewards!

Crewman6 said...

I do too. Especially the 40,000 point one. It's like getting a bonus experience weekend for 30 minutes a day, every day! I'm going to save up for it.

Anonymous said...

That's awesome! Did you see that they put a loyalty shop in Varrock?

Crewman6 said...

I read it,but haven't been there yet. I figure there's no rush until I have the 40,000 points for the bonus exp aura. 40,000 points... that's what, like 27 years from now?

Anonymous said...

I don't know! (Maybe close to that!)

Crewman6 said...

:^)

Anonymous said...

What item(s) do you think looks really cool?

Crewman6 said...

That's a tough one! Hmmm, I think for sure the Bomber Jacket is awesome. I also like the Agile Legs when worn with the re-designed Task Reward equipment and a Fire Cape. I really love the level 2 Completionists Cape, with the smoke trailing off the bottom. (Even though it'll be a long long time before I ever get one!!!)
How about you? Any favorites in mind?

Anonymous said...

I like the look of the fighter torso, torva platebody (not that I'll ever get one!) and I think the Profound CW armour is sweet!

Crewman6 said...

Torva is definitely cool. I like the Profound armor, except for the helmet. I've never gotten Bandos yet,but with the price dropping so much, I can see it as a possibility soon.

I've been flipping a lot the last three days, and the market is far slower than it used to be. Still making money, but not as fast. So I'm doing Barrows for a while. Got Ahrim's Robe bottom, and Verac's Plasteskirt so far. Sold for nearly 3 million, and that's faster than I was making money flipping. Guess I'll stay with Barrows for a while!

Anonymous said...

Nicely done!
I did troll invasion. I killed Cliff!!! (With one rocktail left!)
Do you think I could do barrows?

Crewman6 said...

Cliff is a monster... If you can handle Troll Invasion, you can handle Barrows. When I was still under 100 combat, I did it. But it was slow because of my levels, my unfamiliarity with the game, and the old gear I was using. With modern gear, especially Drakan's Medallion, it's a lot faster for me now. If you want to check out a pretty good (and up-to-date) guide, try Wiki.

Anonymous said...

I think I could kill all of them... except Dharok. I'll check wiki, see if they have and tips.

Crewman6 said...

Dharok's easy if you mage him and pray melee. Verac's more dangerous,he can hit through prayer. But if you can do all the protect prayers, you can manage all the brothers.

Anonymous said...

My magic is only 60. (Not something I like to train!) Should I still go for it?

Crewman6 said...

With 50 Magic and 55 Slayer, you can cast Slayer Dart, which is sufficient for the maging part. The real issue for me is, at what point is Barrows time/cost efficient? When I first tried it years ago, it was before player owned houses. I was low enough that I had to bank between every single trip. And there just wasn't a convenient way to get back and forth. I got bored quickly, and gave up.
Now, though, between better levels, better equipment, and fast transportation, it takes me about 12 minutes per time.
Yesterday I made 6 million in about 2 and a half hours. Of course, today I've only gotten Guthans Chestplate so far... 244k. Kind of random, but I'm enjoying it, so that tips the scales.
I'd say give it a try for 2 or 3 runs, see what you think. If it works, then keep at it. Otherwise, switch to something you'll enjoy more.

Anonymous said...

Can I find a safe zone using magic?

Crewman6 said...

In the old days, I seem to recall standing on the opposite side of the sarcophogus and ranging/maging, but this time around I read that nothing can pass over the coffins.
That sounds like the simple answer is 'No', but there's a workaround. You CAN set up a cannon on one side of the sarcophogus, load it, wake the dead, and run to the other side while the cannonballs do their job.

I've never tried that. Sounds like it could be fun, but time-consuming. For me, part of the allure is that it's fast now, where I used to be very slow. The more times per hour I can cycle through, the better my odds of a good drop.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the tips! (So much!!!!)

Crewman6 said...

You're always welcome! By the way, I just did a blog about barrows, if you want to see my equipment, inventory, order of attack and pray/attack styles for each brother, click the logo at the top of the page.
I pretty much follow the Wiki, but modified a few things here and there to suit. Monique is Barrowing (not really a word) now, and she's using overloads to boost her speed.
... I can't do overloads yet :^(
... But I will soon!! :^)
(That's what my Barrows money is going toward.)

Anonymous said...

Wow, overloads!
We should make Barrowing a word. Thanks for making the blog! Once I post this, I'm going to take a look.

Crewman6 said...

Yeah, she's an Herblore Master... if it weren't for overloads, I'd just let her make all my potions!

We'll start a campaign- Put 'barrowing' in the dictionary!

Hope it helped. I've been having a blast at barrows all weekend, but haven't gotten to play much today. Doesn't look like I will tomorrow or Wednesday either. Oh well, there's always the weekend.

Anonymous said...

I wish overload was tradable too! I got my magic up to 62. Should I use Wind Wave?

Crewman6 said...

If you can afford the runes, I'd use the best spell possible. But if not, I've used Slayer Dart. It works, it's just slow.
With her Overloads, Monique can do the whole initial round of six brothers without running out of prayer... and she's 93 prayer! I can't wait till I can do that.

Anonymous said...

(Insane! All of them!!!!!!!!!) Wind wave is only 5 air and 1 blood. (I'll use an air staff.)

Crewman6 said...

Air Staff is the smart way to go. That should be an efficient mix between power and cost.

I've done 13 runs with no major drop... average is supposed to be 12 to 15, but I usually get a good drop in less. It's a drag when I open the chest and there's NOTHING there!!! :^)

Anonymous said...

I hope you get better drops next time!

Anonymous said...

Were you playing RS when the Falador Massacre happened? (I just read about it yesterday.)

Crewman6 said...

I vaguely remember all the uproar it caused. I wasn't there where the action happened, but I was playing Runescape during the time. I remember wondering what all the fuss and yelling was about, because people were running around all that day hollering about it. I had to search the forums and youtube to find out why everybody was so stirred up.
What skill were you working on last night? Someone was overlapping and I could see your character. I was working on herblore to get overloads.

Crewman6 said...

sorry, meant to say "could NOT see your character"!
I can also remember a mod running around yelling for people to bank their items or log out during that day. I don't believe I was on the world it happened in, I just think they weren't sure at the time of the possible extent of the bug.

Anonymous said...

I was getting ready for barrows. I got all the inventory and armour on.
(I don't know why I like to do that. I guess it makes me feel better that I'm not forgetting something.)

I'm going to try to freeze Dharok and Verac with my Zamorak Godsword and then mage them. (Hopefully he he will die before the ice melts!)

Anonymous said...

I did the barrows. Magic wasn't great. (They hit to high to often.) So I tried melee on all of them and it worked. At the end when I opened the chest I got about 20k worth of stuff. Want 38 bolt racks! Lol. Anyway I ended up losing money. I might make more money then I lose but It might not me by much. I'll go back to it when I'm at 115 combat or so. (Just so I don't need to have as much prayer pots or food.)

Crewman6 said...

I'm glad you gave it a shot. I know what you mean about losing. My recent runs have been sad. 12 runs to get a tooth half. Then 18 runs and still dry after that. I figure it owes me a big score now!
Today I finally got 96 Herblore,so Overloads are an option. I've been making 5,000 of each extreme potion needed, and once I finished that, bought 100 Torstol and made my first overloads.

Now I need to make some money. Earning that skill cost over half my gold in the bank. Monique told me to quit whining, I'm still a multi-millionaire. I said "So are you!", she shot back "But not as multi as YOU are!"

Guess that's what you call our 'Multi-Level'... :^)

Anonymous said...

Nice!
How much money exactly do you have?

Crewman6 said...

I suppose I'm upper middle class... I had about 85m gold, made 16 million barrowing last weekend, and after buying all the herblore supplies the last week, am now at 38 million. It's not that hard to earn, I just have to pick something and do it. Barrows is usually good, though I'm in a dry spell now. Avies are great money. Runecrafting is boring, but profitable. Slayer's good money, though I usually spend a lot on it to cannon, steel titan, and potion for better speed.
Plus I can go back to flipping, though it's really slowed down for me.

I'm going to keep Barrowing for a while. Hope my luck turns!

Anonymous said...

Wow, 85m! Great job!

Crewman6 said...

Most of that originally came from flipping. Now that flipping is such slow going, it's faster to use other means of profit. I'm sure flipping still works, but not so well for the basics I used to flip. Hope to figure it out again. My Barrows went really south. I'm up to 23 runs and no good drops. Makes you start to wonder if you're doing something wrong, but surely it's just an extended stretch of bad luck.
Trying to think of some other way to have fun and make money. I like Avies, but not in the mood. Might play with Salarin the Twisted. He's kind of low-level, but drops lots of good herbs, and the Sinister Key.

Anonymous said...

I'm going to try this new money maker:

1. Buy black d'hide.
2. Tan black d'hide.
3. Sell black dragon leather.
I make 300 GP each one. Not bad!

Crewman6 said...

Monique keeps telling me I should try it. Let me know how it works out.
When we were at the GE earlier, I was actually done herbloring, and getting ready for Troll Invasion. Unfortunately, there's no quick chat options to SAY that, so I was stuck for a way to describe what I was doing. Oh well.
Did pretty decent at the trolls. Put about 56k on Dungeoneering.
I did play with Salarin the Twisted for a while. He's not high-profit, but it's easy and doesn't require a lot of attention. Got about 17 Sinister Keys.

Anonymous said...

I guessed you would be going to the barrows or doing troll invasion.
I can't sell the black dragon leather, I tried just doing 5 to test. They still haven't sold. Oh well.
I'm making teletabs. It was painful to make the clay to soft clay. (I do get more of a profit that way!) It's a great money maker so far!

Crewman6 said...

Sorry the dragon leather didn't pan out. I've always done well at teletabs. It's slow, and I admit... I buy the soft clay. But I sell most of the tabs and keep a few for myself, and still show a profit. Hmmm, maybe I should try to flip teletabs?
I flipped 20,000 red chinchompas last night for a decent profit. Immediately tested their price to do it again, and they had dropped a couple hundred gold. I'm lucky I didn't lose money, so didn't keep trying. They've always been volatile. Fast money sometimes, fast way to lose money at others.

Anonymous said...

I might try buying the soft clay soon!

Crewman6 said...

I know buying the soft clay cuts into the profit margin, but you can use the time saved to make more tabs, so it's not as bad as you'd expect.
I need to make some soon- my personal stock is getting low, and it never hurts to make a little money!

Anonymous said...

Can't argue with that!
I'm getting a good method when I make them. It helps my speed and is easier to do.

Crewman6 said...

:^)

You're right- a good routine can really help. I usually bring the soft clay noted, and let the butler exchange it for me. I know he charges, but if you do the second quest with the old man, the butler will reduce his price. I trade some of my profit for more speed.
If you're raising a pet with multiple stages, this is a good place and time to let him grow up. Just give up a few spaces for pet food.

Anonymous said...

Oh... I just had my butler go to the bank and grab the clay. You method would be way faster. Thanks!
I might bring my kitten. By the end of it he'll be fully grown. :)

Crewman6 said...

It's all to the good. Having an adult cat is useful. When you need to make Evil Dave Stew, a wily cat is just the ticket for getting spices quickly.

Anonymous said...

Do you like the new interface? It put our usernames up in the middle of the box. I don't like it because the text goes over it.

Crewman6 said...

I agree. Text overlap is aggravating. Also, I'm not getting the mouse camera with my scroll wheel. I roll it, click it, flick it sideways... nothing. Hope that gets fixed.
Followed your advice - after penguins tonight, started making teletabs. I was really running short.

Anonymous said...

I don't have that problem because I use a laptop. It's nice because I can go downstairs and play on the sofa or plug it in in my office.
If you make the house tablets you get a (in my opinion) great profit.

Crewman6 said...

Tried again this morning, now it works. Go figure. In the meantime, I'm still making house tabs. I need to restock personally, but some will be for sale too. I have a laptop, but it's not powerful enough to run Runescape except for the simplest of tasks. It's actually a netbook, so screen is tiny. Guess I'm stuck at my desk!

Anonymous said...

I use a Macbook Pro so it has a good amount of power.
What do you like about quests? (Yeah, random... I know.)

Crewman6 said...

Wow- no wonder you like playing Runescape on your laptop. Nice computer.
Random is good! Let's see, quests, okay- First and foremost, I love an excellent reward. My favorite recently was Drakan's Medallion, for all the teleports it gives into Morytania.
Secondly- a quest that's got a fun, fast-moving plot. Not TOO heavy on puzzles, and the combat should be fun, a bit difficult, but not "Nomad" tough.
Finally, it should be about an hour to 2 hours to do. Longer than that, and I start losing interest.

So... what's YOUR criteria for a great quest?

Anonymous said...

I'm the EXACT same! (Only) If it has a lot of back and forth, I do it in parts. I hate that there is back an forth in quests.

Crewman6 said...

I agree. I deeply hate quests that can't be done in one run. That's why I like them 2 hours or less. Do you remember the 'Small Favor' quest? Wow, I hated that quest. Every time I thought I was done, I had to do a favor for someone else!

Anonymous said...

I'm not sure if I've done that one.
Man, after buying the Zamorak godsword for castle wars, my GP is finally rising back up!

Crewman6 said...

That sounds cool. Can you make money at castle wars, or are you doing other things too. I made about 3000 teletabs, sold 1k, and kept the rest. Now I'm Dungeoneering again. At least for a while. Working toward chaotic rapier, but not sure it's worth obsessing over.

Anonymous said...

You can't make money at Castle wars. :(
I'm doing a little bit of both, money making and Castle wars.
Oh... almost forgot to ask you, whats your dungeoneering level?

Crewman6 said...

Too bad Castle Wars isn't profitable. I keep thinking about trying Barrows again. Surely my luck can't stay bad forever?

Anyway, my Dungeoneering is 84. I've currently got a promethian 2-hander, a shadow silk hood, and a celestial surgebox. If you ever need anything smithed for dungeoneering, let me know.

Anonymous said...

How dose that work? Would we go in a floor together, then bind something? I'm just a little unclear with it?
(You can actually make money in Castle wars. You can pick up arrows and bolts. :P)

Crewman6 said...

Yeah, we'd have to set a specific time and world so we could meet up. Go in together, and hunt for Promethium (or whatever the highest ore you could wield is.)

Or we could play it by ear, and next time we're both online (and not in the middle of anything) choose a world and meet right then and there.

Since we wouldn't be trying to score experience, it really doesn't matter about getting killed or anything. It might take a couple of levels or so before finding enough ore, or making enough money to buy some from the trader.

This is how I got my first Promethium 2Hander, only the guy that helped me charged for it. That's when I decided I didn't want to ask for help again, and got my 99 smithing and 90 mining. (Took LOTS more time than expected!)

Now that I can do it for myself, I'd be glad to smith a weapon/armor for you. (I don't know you're dungeoneering level, but am assuming you can bind 2 items?)

Anonymous said...

I think I can bind two. I'll ask if I need anything.
For now though, I'm good.

I'm back to my old money-maker. Magic trees! With my aura lumberjack, I can get around 2-5 logs in only 60 seconds.

Crewman6 said...

Sounds good. Magic trees? Sounds like you're pretty fast at it. I've done the trick at Jennica's Farm (I think) where you chop down the magic tree, then jump through the portal and chop down the cursed magic tree. If the tree is down in one plane, it's standing in the other,so you never have to wait to chop it. But now that PVP is back, I've quit going to it.

Anonymous said...

I chop them them in the Tree Gnome Stronghold. Forgot to add this: If you wear a strung rabbits foot, you get a better chance of getting a birds nest. The nests sell for about 10k if they are crushed.

I want to train prayer, how did you?

Crewman6 said...

I'd forgotten about rabbits foot.
I used the Ecto thing as long as I could stand it. When I got bored out of my skull, switched to using a maxed house altar. With a Pak Yak, it goes really fast. I kept running out of money.
For bones, mostly dragon bones. Flipped at the GE to make the money.
I tried killing dragons myself for the bones, but that would take years. At least, it felt like it would. Now that the urns are available, that might help speed it up.

Anonymous said...

Thanks! I'll keep going until I make a good amount of money to start.

Crewman6 said...

It's certainly an expensive skill. Monique's going for her Prayer 99. If I kill something that drops good bones or ashes, I pass most of it along to her. (I keep enough to make the trip at least break even...)

Anonymous said...

That's nice!

I started getting a lot of birds nests, in about one hour I got 6! Not a lot, but it adds up.

Crewman6 said...

At 10k each, they certainly do! You make me want to grab a hatchet and go cut some lumber!

Crewman6 said...

Sounds like a plan. Currently, I fish shark when I need something easy to level up (as a break from Dungeoneering), but I think woodcutting could benefit just as well!

Anonymous said...

I wonder if I'll see you! :)

Right now I'm training some slayer, then a lot of woodcutting, then some more slayer. Its a nice system for me!

Crewman6 said...

Sounds like a nice way to break the monotony of just skilling. I enjoy Slayer, but right now I've been in more of a Dungeoneering mood.
And if you see me treecutting, you'll know it's me because I'll have Jad out! :^)

Anonymous said...

I just got bronze dragons as a slayer task. Do you have any tips for me?

Crewman6 said...

They'll be easy for you. Wear prayer-boosting gear, Proselyte, Initiate, Soul Wars cape if you've got one.
Don't forget anti-dragon shield. I like Korasi's Sword (for it's Stab) or a whip. Bring 3 or 4 Anti-fire potions, an emergency teleport and a good food item or two. (I like Rocktail!)
Leave a couple empty spots, and fill up the rest with Prayer pots. If you're confident, bring high-alch runes.
I know there's bronzes in the chaos tunnels, but my favorite are in the Karamja Dungeon.
If you want to speed it up, bring some super Str and Att pots.
You'll have fun. Just watch your prayer, pray melee, keep your anti-fire going, and your golden!

Anonymous said...

Thanks! I'll start right away!

Crewman6 said...

Hope you enjoy them! Let me know how it goes. How many did you get assigned?

Anonymous said...

I think I got about 120 of them. I'm down to 34! It's a fun task! Where do you chop magic trees?

Crewman6 said...

I knew you'd enjoy them. Dragons are one of my favorites. (Except the brutal dragons. Not much fun there!)
For magic trees, I used to use Jennica's Farm. There's a magic tree growing there right next to a portal. If you chop down the tree, then step through the portal, it's standing on the other side. Never wait for it to re-grow. Now that the wilderness has pvp again, I don't use it any more. For now, I'm using the same place you like- Gnome Stronghold, near the treehouse bank.

Anonymous said...

If that tree is gone you have 2 more options.
1. Go to the agility course and there will be one below it.
2. (You need level 75 farming for this.) Plant a magic tree right by the bank.

Crewman6 said...

I remember the one by the agility course; didnt' think about it. :^)
I have a magic tree planted by the bank (and barely northeast of the regular one there). I've been considering the 6 magic trees in the Varrock Resource Dungeon, but getting to it seems like a pain. I'd hate to run that way every time I needed to do a bank drop. I think if I try the resource dungeon, I'll switch to ancient magic and teleport with the Paddewwa destination- right inside the Edgeville dungeon. It's still a bit of a run, but using the pipe shortcut, it's the closest approach I can think of.

Anonymous said...

That's awesome that you found a good spot!

Crewman6 said...

Yeah, I may take a pak yak and see how it goes soon. Right now, I'm doing Mobilising Armies to get the Berserker Ring(i). It's part of a recommended setup I found for meleeing Jad within seconds. I want to try it, but need the ring, and a Chaotic Rapier too, though I may get impatient and try it with just a whip. But anyway, I made about 60 points last night. Only 240 more to go...

Anonymous said...

It would be nice for me to upgrade it too. How do you play it?

Crewman6 said...

To start with, talk to the cadet at the entry to Mobilising Armies. He'll get you initially set up and ready to play your first game. Then play the one called 'Conflict', only so you can unlock 'Siege'. That's the one to play over and over. Follow the instructions at this link:
http://tlp-rs.org/topic/7365680/1/
That's what I'm doing.
I had a heck of a time finding a team to play Conflict, when you're ready, let me know. I can be one of the players so you can get it done.

Anonymous said...

I'm not able to log into a members world. Have you had anything like this before?

Crewman6 said...

Occasionally. Sometimes it's a specific server. Try a different members world and see if that helps. If you already did, then I'm not sure. Try running ccleaner on your computer and rebooting, maybe?

Anonymous said...

Okay I'll try rebooting it.

Crewman6 said...

I saw you log back on and off briefly late last night. Did it finally start working? Hope you can get back on today.

Anonymous said...

It's not working yet, but I can get to the lobby fine.
(Or a free players world!)
I sent Jagex an email. I hope they fix it!

Crewman6 said...

Me too. That's one of the annoying things in the world when it's the weekend, you're looking forward to relaxing and getting some good Runescape play in, and you can't get in!!
About a month ago we had 2 solid weeks of 'intermittent' internet service. Until they fixed it, I couldn't do ANYTHING dangerous, because it kept disconnecting every 10 minutes.

Hope you can get back on soon.
